Production Manager

COMPANY

Mercury Paper is a tissue converting company with affiliated plant and warehouses in Virginia. Since 2010, Mercury has steadily grown in the away from home (AFH), retail private label (PL) and retail branded (FIORA) sales channels.

DEPARTMENT

The Production Department is responsible for turning raw materials into finished goods through a series of efficient processes and procedures. The department consists of various levels of machine operators, who run the machines for maximum output and forklift operators, who feed the raw material to the machines and move the finished goods to the warehouse. The team leads supervise the operators on shift.

JOB PURPORSE

Provide leadership to converting teams to manage all aspects of converting activities. The incumbent is charged with leading and motivating team members and ensuring training and development of those individuals is continuous and up to date. The Production Manager ensures processes are meeting established production KPI’s and resources are available and assigned as needed

KEY ROLES

Coordinate with Shift Leaders in trouble shooting and problem resolution to achieve department and shift specific objectives. Ensure systems, policies and procedures are in place to manage Safety, Quality, Production, and Cost. Works closely with Plant Manager – production, Safety Manager - implement systems and processes to ensure superior safety results, Direct Reports – Shift Leaders, Production Admin, Area Production Leads, Technical Specialist

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cost: Continuous adherence to all corporate financial guidelines as well as actively seeking means and measures to reduce converting cost and improve net gross.
  • Housekeeping: Create and maintain superior standards for housekeeping and appearance of the production area through visible leadership and ownership. Customer/tour ready at all times
  • Production: Manage converting equipment and personnel to deliver on targeted production goals as measured by case/DRP output, metric tonnage and operational efficiency. Ensure department
  • is meeting Speed, Production Operational Efficiency, and Net Gross targets. Establish improvement programs to meet and exceed production KPI’s.
  • Production Schedule: Work closely with Supply Chain PPIC and Maintenance to optimize production schedule and grade changes while minimizing production downtime.
  • Quality: Ensure all quality measures and assurances are being met in order to provide our customers quality product which consistently meets or exceeds their expectations.
  • Safety: Ensure all aspects of the Manufacturing Operations, personnel, equipment and are compliant with federal, state, and local laws. Develop and implement systems and processes to ensure superior safety results and well-being of employees.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education & Knowledge

  • Education equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Five years of relevant production experience.
  • Two years of direct supervisory experience in a manufacturing/industrial environment.

Skills & Abilities

Production Manager must be self-driven and possess initiative to maintain an efficient operational process. Leadership skills, including communication, mentoring, planning and organizing, troubleshooting, and team member interaction, are critical to success in this position. Given the nature of the business the incumbent must understand the basic functionality of the equipment and the process for how the operation flows.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and written across diverse functional areas.
  • Develop systems and procedures to manage overall processes
  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend at the waist for up to 12 hours each day, and safely lift up to 70 lbs. as needed.
  • Must have a solid understanding of all production systems.
  • Must possess ability to champion ideals and drive change in all aspects of the operation
  • Must possess ability to learn and negotiate all operation systems.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position offers a desk and a computer with email, but mostly requires work in a dusty environment with noise levels up to 90 dB , moving mechanical parts, industrial lighting, air that is not conditioned.

  • Proper PPE required.
  • Must have the ability to safely lift up to 70 lbs. as needed.
  • Must be able to work 8-12 hours per shift.
  • Must be able to sit, bend, stand and walk during scheduled shift.
