Distribution Supervisor

COMPANY

Mercury Paper is a tissue converting company with affiliated plant and warehouses in Virginia. Since 2010, Mercury has steadily grown in the away from home (AFH), retail private label (PL) and retail branded (FIORA) sales channels.

DEPARTMENT

The Distribution Department is responsible for receiving raw materials and finished product from production/outside vendors and shipping out to end user/customer while maintaining the orderly stacking and storage of product in a safe manner.

JOB PURPORSE

The Distribution Supervisor supervises finished goods handlers on their team to ensure compliance requirements in accordance with established company policies and procedures, and assists and backs up the Distribution Manager. Maintains the orderly stacking and storage of finished goods and staging and loading or unloading of shipments. Responsible for management of accurate and timely inventory control and month end processing. The position is responsible for ensuring a safe working environment inside and outside the Warehouse and filling in where needed on forklifts, and clamp trucks.

KEY ROLES

  • Consults with management to clarify department priorities, identify problems, and suggest changes for improvement.
  • Leadership – point person on shift for all finished goods related and warehouse employee issues. This includes but is not limited to: discrepancies with inventory, loading and unloading finished goods, inventory control to and answering operational questions, coordinating breaks, assisting with staff scheduling and timekeeping, conflict resolution between employees, and motivating employees to achieve optimum productivity and morale.
  • Take direction from, assist and back-up Warehouse Manager and / or Plant Manager.
  • Works closely with Warehouse Lead, Shift Leader, Shipping/Receiving Department, QA/QC, Plant Manager, Plant Logistics Team

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Counts, weighs or measures incoming or outgoing items to compare identifying information and variety against production orders to ensure correct delivery of finished goods.
  • Determines appropriate storage locations and oversees placement of stock.
  • Determines shipping priorities and shipping methods required to meet shipping and receiving schedules.
  • Ensures assigned teams shipments are accurate and free of damage
  • Fills production orders and issues products requests; documents transactions appropriately
  • Housekeeping duties
  • Keeping the integrity of the finished goods in mind and will deliver finished goods with little to no defect caused by the handling process.
  • Leads and assists shipping and receiving workers in shipping and receiving activities.
  • Maintains warehouse arrangement and maximizes space utilization to accommodate current stock.
  • May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned
  • Monitors incoming and outgoing shipping activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and condition of shipments.
  • On call for after-hours questions, as needed.
  • Operates a label-printing machine and manually labels boxes as needed in order to ensure proper shipping and receiving.
  • Operates finished goods equipment used in receipt, storage, and shipment of goods within warehouse areas
  • Oversees the loading, unloading, movement, and distribution of finish goods.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance and housekeeping on equipment
  • Performs final quality check/inspection for accuracy and visible damage prior to shipment to customer.
  • Performs fork lift inspection as required by Mercury Paper safety standards; ensures proper documentation is completed
  • Prepares items for shipment.
  • Provides on the job training to lower level employees and resolves problems utilizing knowledge of the finished goods flow operation
  • Spot checks stock inventory; verify accuracy of records.
  • Takes physical inventories on regular basis.

  • Uses forklifts or other warehouse equipment in order to supply production and/or facilitate shipping.

  • Will properly allocate time during his/her shift to make sure that all duties will be performed in a timely manner as to keep the operation running smoothly.
  • Write up work orders for repairs needed in the Distribution Center and send to Maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Internal

  • Warehouse Lead, Shift Leader, Shipping/Receiving Department, QA/QC, Plant Manager, Plant Logistics Teamgistics/Warehouse dept. – ensure timely deliveries of orders.

External

  • Outside vendors/contractors to include all major trucking companies and 3rd party warehouses handling Mercury Paper Assets.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education & Knowledge

  • B. S. Degree or equivalent work experience in Warehousing and Distribution
  • 3 years of experience working in a manufacturing or warehouse environment
  • Knowledge of shipping and receiving procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of RF Scanners, computers, SAP, Outlook, ADP, and related systems/software
  • Knowledge of reading, legible writing, and basic mathematical calculations
  • Knowledge of inventory control methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of record keeping practices
  • Knowledge of safety practices
  • Knowledge of inventory control and the role it plays within the operation
  • Experience in lifting heavy packages and objects with a fork lift
  • Experience in operating large vehicles in tight and congested areas; experience

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position is in a warehouse environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, email, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. There is sitting and repetitive hand, finger and wrist use.

  • Must be flexible and responsive to the needs of the department/facility/business.
  • Must wear required PPE as required by company safety rules and guidelines
  • Must be able to safely lift up to 20lbs.
